Surf What You Have With You

Looking past Capitola Pier

I love paddling the home waters, but it was finally time to get to the other side of Monterey Bay.  My radial head fracture is repairing itself quite nicely, thank you, and my orthopedic surgeon recently prescribed paddling and playing guitar to be included in my recovery protocol. A doctor like this I could learn to love.

I pulled into Capitola around 6:15 am to closed off streets. Turns out Capitola’s hosting a rod & car show.

It was great to finally get in a paddle with Nick Bryson. I had neither paddled with Nick since last September nor paddled the Santa Cruz waters for nearly a year. Nick, who is both a friend and a training partner, has what once was my Eaton 14. We put in 10 miles, paddling glass inside from Capitola to the Santa Cruz Harbor, then upwind to the mile buoy. The downwind leg took us back to Pleasure point and inside the kelp line for the return.

The lineups were thin, even though a swell was on. So we poached a few on our paddleboards – hey, surf what you have with you!

I stuck around to stroll the streets and brunch out at Zelda’s. Life is good. Though I'm not much of a gearhead, those cars were too good to pass up.
